No engine lasts forever. No matter how much you baby your pride-and-joy, the day will come when you realize the motor isn’t up to the job. Perhaps it starts burning oil, or maybe you’re tired of being passed by cars with more horsepower and torque. Whatever the trigger, sooner or later you realize something must be done.
Options for a Worn-Out Engine
For many Jeep enthusiasts, the first instinct is to pull the motor and rebuild it. Wiser heads may get out the checkbook, paying a specialist to build them a custom engine. We’re here to tell you there’s a third option — the custom crate engine.
A crate engine is so-called because it comes in — you guessed it — a crate. It’s a new engine, built to OE specs. That’s good, but it’s also bad.
It’s good because, with all-new components, you know the engine will last. It’s also bad because it has all the weaknesses and limitations of the original design. The 4.2L used in Jeeps from 1971 through 1990 is an excellent example. This puts out between 120 and 150 horsepower. That’s not a lot, especially by modern standards. If you’re spending a significant amount of money on a new engine, shouldn’t you get one that’s upgraded to modern standards? That’s the reasoning behind our 4.6L Jeep stroker engine.
Time for a Custom Crate Engine?
As a crate engine, our 4.6L stroker is pretty much a straight swap for what’s under the hood right now. However, the “stroker” part tells you you’re not getting an OE-spec engine. Instead, you’re getting a motor that’s substantially modified to deliver the power and torque you want and need. That’s why we call it a custom crate engine.
A “stroked” motor is one with a longer throw on the crank. This means more torque and, because the pistons sweep a greater volume, more displacement. The beauty of stroking a motor is that you can use the stock block — in this case the Jeep 4.2L or 4.0L — but in effect get a bigger, torquier engine.
