Custom-Built Chevy LTx Engines: LT1 & LT4 Performance

Evolution of the Iconic LT1 and LT4 Small Block Engines

The Chevy LT1 engine debuted in 1970, delivering a then-impressive 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque from its cast iron small block architecture. This engine marked the start of a performance legacy that continues to evolve.

In 1992, GM revived the LT1 name for a redesigned small block featuring reverse-flow cooling for improved compression. Output reached 300 hp and 330 lb-ft, paving the way for the short-lived but enhanced LT4. Introduced with higher lift camshafts, aluminum heads, and larger valves, the 1996 LT4 produced 330 hp before being succeeded by the LS1 in 1997.

Modern LT1 and Supercharged LT4 Engines (2014–Present)

The LT1 returned in 2014 with a cutting-edge design: 6.2L displacement, aluminum block, titanium intake valves, forged internals, and advanced lubrication options. Performance climbed to 460 hp and 465 lb-ft.

Still, for drivers craving more, the LT4 followed—featuring an Eaton supercharger to unleash 640 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque, making it a true modern muscle benchmark.
